Elise Mertens got through in straight sets against Lanlana Tararudee to advance at the Australian Open. Mertens broke at the end of the first set to take the lead, before dominating the second to win 7-5 6-1 after one hour and 32 minutes. Mertens leads the head-to-head 1-0, after defeating Uchijima in the quarter-finals of the Jasmin Open over three years ago. The Belgian won in three sets that day, but she has the quality to get past Uchijima in straights this time around.
