Elise Mertens vs Linda Fruhvirtova prediction

Elise Mertens got her grass court preparations off to the perfect start as she won the Libema Open title. She memorably saved 11 points in the semi-final against Ekaterina Alexandrova and then defeated Elena-Gabriela Ruse in the final. 

She also competed at the Bad Homburg Open a week later but lost early on to Elina Svitolina in straight sets. Her best finish at Wimbledon were two fourth-round appearances, achieved in 2019 and 2022.

Her first-round opponent will be Linda Fruhvirtova. She competed in just one event on grass prior to the third major but did exceptionally well, as she won four matches in a row to make the final of the Birmingham Classic on the Challenger Tour. However, she was thoroughly uncompetitive in that final as she lost 6-1 6-2 to Greet Minnen.

Fruhvirtova won her three qualifying matches so her overall record on grass this season stands at a healthy 7-1 win-loss record. She also defeated Mertens in their only encounter, a shock win over the Belgian as a wildcard in the first-round of the Miami Open three years ago.

Mertens is still a very firm favourite to advance but Fruhvirtova could prove to be a test as a first-round opponent.
