Number 25 seed for the tournament, Elise Mertens is looking to replicate her impressive performance at Wimbledon last summer, where she reached the fourth round. The Belgian, an excellent doubles player, hasn’t enjoyed a brilliant run of it in singles competitions of late.
38-year-old Laura Siegemund, once ranked number four in the world as recently as January 2024 and a former Grand Slam winner, is a two-time Wimbledon quarter-finalist. The German was beaten by Sara Bejlek in the first round of the Eastbourne Open last month after a second round exit at Queen’s the week before.
Siegemund is an experienced and wily operator and that should mean quite a close, drawn out contest against a similarly rated Mertens on Court 14 here.
