Elise Mertens had to come from a set behind to defeat Viktorija Golubic in the first round, saving two match points in the second-set tie-break to prevail over her Swiss opponent.
That win preserved her record of always having progressed to at least the second round at the Australian Open, but she knows that she will need to raise her game significantly if she is to go any further, as her second-round opponent Jessica Pegula delivered a thoroughly dominant performance in her own opener.
The American dropped just three games in a two-set victory over teenager Maya Joint, where she looked in confident mood following a run to the final of the recent Adelaide International.
Having reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open in three of her last four entries, Pegula clearly feels comfortable in Melbourne, and although Mertens has won all three previous meetings between the two players, we’re backing Pegula to turn the tide here.
