Elise Mertens vs Iga Swiatek prediction

Elise Mertens advanced to the quarter-finals of a WTA 1000 event for the first time this season after claiming a maiden victory over world number four Coco Gauff. Mertens had lost her previous five matches to Gauff, but she conceded just the one break point in this encounter, winning 6-3 6-3 after one hour and 18 minutes. 

Mertens will now face six-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek for a place in the last four. Swiatek produced a fine display to end Iva Jovic’s six-match unbeaten run in the round-of-16. The 25-year-old was on the verge of a third-round exit to Donna Vekic, after falling a set and a double break behind, but she fought back to advance. By contrast, she made a blistering start against Jovic, winning eight of the opening nine games on her way to a 6-1 6-4 victory. 

Swiatek leads the head-to-head 2-0 and is yet to drop a set to Mertens. If she can maintain the level she showed in the previous round, she will be difficult to stop.
