Elise Mertens returns to action after winning the doubles title at Wimbledon so she will come into the Canadian Open in great spirits.

The Belgian 29-year-old returns with her doubles partner Veronika Kudermetova but she has singles business to handle first as she takes on Anna Kalinskaya.

Kalinskaya also comes into this match in a positive mood as she reached the final in Washington last week. She had an excellent week but ultimately fell in the final to Leylah Fernandez.

It will be interesting to see if there are any physical or mental after-effects to that run last week given the short turnaround but she can take heart from her previous meetings with Mertens.

Kalinskaya has won both of their previous meetings which came in 2022 and 2023. Both were competitive affairs and went to three sets and it would be no surprise if this one also went the distance. We marginally prefer Kalinskaya but we have concerns over any negative effects from reaching the final last week. For that reason, we lean towards set betting and both players to win a set.
