Elise Mertens enjoyed her best run at a Grand Slam since the 2020 US Open as she made it through to the quarter-finals of Wimbledon last time out. This included an impressive win over world number two Elena Rybakina. Her tournament ended against eventual champion Linda Noskova, but that was her best singles result of the season so far.
Mertens now returns to the tour after a few weeks away, facing Anna Bondar in Toronto. The Hungarian won her opening match as she got past Anhelina Kalinina. Bondar was down a break of serve in both sets but managed to wrestle back control as she won 6-4 7-5. Bondar reached her third successive final at the Hamburg Open last week, and has won five of her last six matches.
These two faced each other in the first-round of this event four years ago, with Mertens winning in straight sets. A similar result this time around would not be surprising.
