Iga Swiatek kicks off her Rome title defence with question marks over her Queen of Clay status in 2025.

The three-time champion in the Italian capital saw her hopes of retaining the Madrid crown end in a shocking 6-1 6-1 drubbing in the semi-finals against Coco Gauff.

It follows a run of form where she has struggled to make her usual mark at the business end of tournaments and the Pole is in major need of a strong run in Rome to boost her confidence ahead of Roland-Garros.

First up at the Foro Italico she meets home wildcard Elisabetta Cocciaretto. 

The Italian underdog is ranked at 84 in the world and reached round two with a 6-2 4-6 6-1 success against Elina Avanesyan. 

The 24-year-old has a 1-6 record against top 10 opponents and she won’t improve that here with Swiatek sure to respond in conditions she prefers to Madrid.
