Elina Svitolina continued her serene progress at the Australian Open as she got past Diana Shnaider in straight sets. Breaks were traded in the first set, but Svitolina would edge ahead in the tiebreak. She broke the Shnaider serve on three more occasions in the second as she won 7-6 (4) 6-3 after one hour and 33 minutes. She is yet to drop a set at the tournament.

Svitolina now faces Mirra Andreeva. She defeated Elena-Gabriela Ruse to advance to the next round. The 18-year-old comfortably took the lead but was tested in the second set against Ruse, as she was broken on serve twice. Nevertheless, Andreeva responded well and went on to win 6-3 6-4 after an hour and 36 minutes.

Andreeva leads the head-to-head 1-0 after beating Svitolina in straight sets at the quarter-final stage of last year’s Indian Wells on her way to the title. Svitolina will be her biggest threat so far, but Andreeva has found a way to win recently and is on a seven match winning streak.
