Elina Svitolina received a bye in the first-round as the fifth seed. She has won two titles this season, with the highlight being her third Italian Open in May. She continued her consistent campaign with a run to the quarter-finals in Beijing, where she lost to home favourite Zheng Qinwen. Overall, she has 48 wins from 64 matches overall, with 31 occurring on hard courts. 

She faces Liudmila Samsonova in her opening match. Samsonova defeated Katerina Siniakova to begin her campaign in Wuhan. The 27-year-old easily went ahead after the first set and looked on course for a comfortable win after opening up a lead in the second. However, she was broken when serving for the match, with Siniakova reeling off four games in a row to draw level. Nevertheless, Samsonova responded brilliantly to win 6-1 5-7 6-2.

Svitolina leads the head-to-head 1-0 after coming from a set down to win at the Bad Homburg Open earlier this year.
