Katie Boulter’s first match under Maria Sharapova’s former coach Michael Joyce was a positive one as she made a winning start in Auckland.
The Brit claimed a 6-3 6-3 win over Yuliia Starodubtseva and will now take on top seed Elina Svitolina.
The Ukrainian will be a significant step up in class and she made short work of Varvara Gracheva by posting a 6-3 6-1 victory.
Svitolina won their only previous match in straight sets at the Australian Open back in 2020.
Boulter is a tougher nut to crack nowadays and the impact of Joyce will be interesting to see in this early test of the relationship.
