Mertens already has a grass court title to her name at the Libema Open this month and put some pressure on Svitolina in the first set, but the Ukrainian saved a couple of set points and then earned a late break to get in front. She backed that up by breaking the Mertens serve in the second set and getting over the line.
Beatriz Haddad Maia will be her next opponent as she beat Ashlyn Krueger 6-1 6-4 in the first-round. She created a number of opportunities on the American’s serve with 11 break points in total, beating Krueger for a second time this season.
