Elina Svitolina had to dig deep in the second-round, eventually overcoming Maya Joint in three sets to advance at the US Open. The Ukrainian comfortably led after the first set, but Joint saved a match point and edged a tight second set tiebreak to level proceedings. Svitolina’s experience proved decisive in the decider, and she came through to win 6-2 6-7 (6) 6-4. She had enjoyed a far more comfortable outing in the first-round, as she brushed aside Solana Sierra.

Her next opponent is Anna Kalinskaya. The Russian also needed three sets in round two, defeating Xinyu Wang 7-5 2-6 6-3 after two hours and 22 minutes. Kalinskaya, who reached the quarter-finals of Roland Garros earlier this year, is just one match away from her best ever result at Flushing Meadows.

Svitolina leads the head-to-head 4-1, although Kalinskaya’s only victory came relatively recently, winning 6-4 6-3 in Doha in February. Svitolina was leading 6-1 4-1 when Kalinskaya retired from their most recent meeting in Berlin. The world number nine deserves to be the favourite given her consistency and strong record against her opponent, but the Russian has enough power to keep this competitive and has already beaten Svitolina this year.
