Alexandra Eala scored a tremendous upset with victory over Elena Rybakina in Berlin.
The Filipina was in magnificent form as she took down the world number two by a 7-5 6-4 scoreline.
The world number 35 will now meet sixth seed Elina Svitolina, who comfortably despatched Eva Lys 6-3 6-2.
This will be their first meeting and Eala will fancy her chances given she has beaten both former Wimbledon winner Rybakina and this year’s Queen’s champion Donna Vekic already this week.
That said, Svitolina is playing at a supreme level in 2026 with deep runs par for the course. The Ukrainian often finds a way to scrap and counter punch her way out of trouble and that may well be the case here, with plenty of games to consider and the top-tenner getting it done outright.
