Elena Rybakina failed to make a deep run at Wimbledon, with the 2022 champion losing to Clara Tauson in the third-round. This would have been a disappointment for Rybakina after a period of decent form, which saw her reach two quarter-finals on grass, the fourth-round at Roland Garros and pick up a title in Strasbourg. Nevertheless, Rybakina is seeded third here and will be viewed as one of the favourites.
Victoria Mboko will be her opponent in round two as she continued her rise with a win in the first-round against Anastasia Potapova. The 18-year-old won 75% of her first serve points and created 13 break point opportunities overall. The Canadian comfortably won the first set and came from a break down early in the second to win 6-2 6-4.
Mboko will be a threat on the tour for years to come but it’s likely to come too soon against an aggressive player like Rybakina, who is likely to dictate a lot of the points here with her offensive style from the baseline.
