Elena Rybakina was not at her best but still advanced past Shuai Zhang in straight sets. The 2022 Wimbledon champion took the first set comfortably but did go 4-1 down in the second. She recovered well, breaking twice to win 6-3 7-5 after just an hour and 13 minutes. Stretching back to last season, Rybakina has won her last 12 completed matches.
She faces Paula Badosa in the next round. The Spaniard was making her return to competitive singles action after another injury layoff and produced a fine comeback win over Marie Bouzkova. Badosa was 2-1 down in the decider but won the final five games to claim a 6-7 (4) 6-4 6-2 victory after three hours and one minute.
Rybakina leads the WTA head-to-head 4-3 and has won their last three meetings. Badosa’s previous match will have taken a lot out of her, and she will need to produce a really strong performance to threaten Rybakina.
