Elena Rybakina became the first player to qualify for the semi-finals of the WTA Finals as she recovered superbly to defeat world number two Iga Swiatek in their group stage match. Swiatek began strongly, quickly taking a 3-0 lead and going in front after the first set. However, it was pure domination from Rybakina after that as she won 12 of the next 13 games to win 3-6 6-1 6-0. The 2022 Wimbledon champion has won her last eight completed matches.

Madison Keys, by contrast, has already been eliminated from the competition as she lost her second successive group stage match. She took the first set against fellow American Amanda Anisimova, but the two-time Grand Slam finalist came back to win 4-6 6-3 6-2. Keys has been struggling with illness during the event, while this is also her first event since late August due to injury.

The head-to-head is evenly matched at 3-3, with Rybakina coming from a set down to win their last meeting in the fourth-round of the Cincinnati Open during the summer.

An under-par Keys is likely to find it tough against a rampant Rybakina, who is arguably enjoying her best stretch of the season during these final weeks.
