Elena Rybakina cruised through to the quarter-finals after defeating Elise Mertens in straight sets. The world number five was not broken on serve and fired 23 winners on her way to a 6-1 6-3 victory after one hour and 17 minutes. This was Rybakina’s strongest display of the tournament, and she is just two wins away from her second final in Melbourne, having achieved the feat in 2023.

She now takes on world number two Iga Swiatek. The Pole wasted no time in getting through to the last eight as she thrashed Maddison Inglis. Swiatek won 83% of her first serve points and made a storming start to the match as she went on to win 6-0 6-3 after just an hour and 13 minutes. 

Swiatek leads the head-to-head 6-5 and 4-2 on outdoor hard court. However, Rybakina defeated Swiatek in the round-of-16 here three years ago on her way to making the final. Furthermore, she won their most recent meeting, at the round robin stage of the WTA Finals. 

Rybakina’s flat groundstrokes could rush Swiatek at times and force her into mistakes, while her serve is likely to provide her with more free points. There’s huge pressure on Swiatek, with the prospect of a Career Grand Slam later down the line, and it may just play into Rybakina’s hands.
