Elena Rybakina was not at her best but got through her second-round match against Caty McNally. She missed the opportunity to convert two break points in the sixth game of the second set and was made to pay as McNally managed to force a decider. Nevertheless, the world number 10 recovered well to win 7-5 4-6 6-3.
Eva Lys will be her opponent in the third-round. She produced a brilliant comeback in the decider to defeat Iva Jovic and end her winning run. Jovic, who won her first title in Guadalajara a fortnight ago, looked set to win after going 5-2 up in the third set but Lys broke on three successive occasions, reeling off five games in a row to win 6-3 4-6 7-5.
Lys is a fine player but Rybakina is likely to improve on her second-round match, and her powerful game should be too much for the 23-year-old.
