Elena-Gabriela Ruse began her grass court season with a quarter-final appearance at the Libema Open. She did beat Elise Mertens in a rematch of the previous year’s final, but she failed to reach that stage of the tournament for a second successive year as she was defeated by two-time Grand Slam singles champion Barbora Krejcikova in the last eight. The Romanian won both of her qualifying matches to enter the main draw of this event, coming from a set down to beat Taylor Townsend in the second stage.
She will face Linda Noskova, the fifth seed at the tournament. The Czech enters the tournament on the back of one of the best results of her career after winning the German Open. Noskova got past Alexandra Eala in the semi-finals and then overcame third seed Jessica Pegula in the final.
Noskova will be arriving at this event with plenty of confidence, but it is a quick turnaround, and Ruse can be an effective player on grass.
