Elena-Gabriela Ruse advanced to her second semi-final of the season after getting past Emma Navarro in straight sets. Navarro had reached the Nottingham Open final last week, and also defeated top seed Iga Swiatek in the previous round of this tournament, but she didn’t even fashion a break point as Ruse comfortably won 6-4 6-2 after just an hour and 15 minutes.
She will now face Karolina Muchova after she recovered from a tough start to beat Clara Tauson. There were 10 breaks of serve in the match, with Muchova winning 1-6 6-2 6-4.
Muchova leads the head-to-head 1-0 after a win over Ruse in Auckland three years ago, but this will be their first meeting on grass. Ruse is a tough player on this surface, and she could cause problems for Muchova if she maintains her aggression from the start. The former Roland Garros finalist is the favourite, but this is likely to be a stern test.
