Elena Gabriela-Ruse continued her serene progress in Rosmalen as she defeated last year’s finalist Bianca Andreescu in straight sets. The Romanian went a double break up early on, racing to a 4-0 lead and coming through to win 6-2 6-4 overall. It’s been a wonderful week for Gabriela-Ruse, who has won all six of her matches including qualifying without the drop of a set.
Elisabetta Cocciaretto also hasn’t dropped a set at this year’s tournament. She beat Suzan Lamens in the quarter-finals, winning 6-2 7-6. The Italian went a break down in the second set but recovered well to take the set on a tiebreak. She’s into her first semi-final since the Birmingham Classic last year.
Both players have rarely looked troubled in this event so far but it’s hard to look beyond the higher ranked Gabriela-Ruse. She’s not even been taken to a tiebreak in each of her five straight set victories and has adjusted to the grass perfectly.
