Elena-Gabriela Ruse overcame a stumble in the second set to advance into the second-round after a win over Dayana Yastremska. The Romanian took the first set and looked to be cruising her way to victory as she established a 5-1 lead in the second. However, Yastremska broke on two consecutive occasions as Ruse attempted to close out the match, winning four games in a row. Nevertheless, Ruse broke and closed it out at the third time of asking to win 6-4 7-5.
She takes on Ajla Tomljanovic next. The Australian made a strong comeback to get through to round two. Her opponent Yuliia Starodubtseva took the first set but Tomljanovic levelled the match up after winning the second set tiebreak. She dominated the decider to win 5-7 7-6 (3) 6-1.
There is little to separate the pair, with just one place between them in the world rankings. Tomljanovic has the home advantage, but Ruse could pose a threat if she’s striking the ball well in the early exchanges.
