Ekaterina Alexandrova recorded her fourth victory in her last five matches as she defeated the returning Belinda Bencic 6-1 6-2 in the first-round. The Russian was dominant throughout the whole contest and now faces Maria Sakkari for a place in the quarter-finals.
Sakkari beat Yulia Putinstseva 7-5 7-6 in her first-round encounter. There was a frosty exchange of words between the pair after the match, but more importantly Sakkari is back to winning ways after her disappointing qualifying defeat to Rebecca Masarova in the German Open last week.
The Greek player leads the head-to-head 4-1, though most of these matches occurred when Sakkari was ranked far higher in the world and a more dominant competitor on the tour. This will also be their first match on grass which suits Alexandrova more and she will hope to continue the momentum from her run to the semi-finals of the Libema Open.
