Ekaterina Alexandrova defeated Ann Li in straight sets to advance at the Wuhan Open. A tight first set saw early breaks exchanged, with Alexandrova crucially saving two break points at 4-4. She edged clear in the tiebreak and broke twice in the second set to win 7-6 6-2. She was still under pressure in her service games in the second, with Alexandrova saving six out of seven break point opportunities overall. Nevertheless, this was a step in the right direction for the world number 11 after her early exit at the China Open.
Jessica Pegula is her next opponent. The American overcame a scare to defeat Hailey Baptiste in three sets. Pegula looked to have the match wrapped up at 5-2 in the decider but twice failed to serve out the match despite having match points in both service games. Baptiste kept going but Pegula had just enough in the tiebreak, securing the win on her seventh match point to win 6-4 4-6 7-6 (6) after two hours and 55 minutes.
Alexandrova leads the head-to-head 3-2 and 2-0 on hard courts. They’ve already faced each other three times this season, with the Russian winning in Doha and Stuttgart, while Pegula came out on top in Charleston. The fresher Alexandrova will fancy her chances of another victory over the world number six, who has built up a lot of mileage over the past few weeks.
