Ekaterina Alexandrova continued her strong grass court form as she beat Maria Sakkari in three sets. The Russian was not broken during the match, but Sakkari managed to force a decider by taking the second set on a tiebreak. Alexandrova still recovered well to earn an early break in set three and wrap up a 6-3 6-7 6-3 victory.
She faces four-time French Open winner Iga Swiatek in the last eight. Swiatek got her grass court preparations off to a winning start as she beat Victoria Azarenka for a fifth time in a row. The Pole serve’s looked to be in order, but she will face a much tougher test against Alexandrova.
This will be their first match on grass, though Swiatek does lead the head-to-head 3-2. However, Alexandrova came out on top in their last encounter, in the fourth-round of the Miami Open last year, winning 6-4 6-2. She has five wins from her six matches on grass this season and is excellent value to oust Swiatek and make back-to-back semi-finals on the surface.
