Ekaterina Alexandrova produced her best display in quite some time as she knocked out world number one Aryna Sabalenka in the round-of-16 at the Canadian Open. The Russian came from a break down in the deciding set to win 7-6 (3) 4-6 6-4 after two hours and 29 minutes. This was Alexandrova’s fifth career victory against Sabalenka, and she can now look forward to a quarter-final against Elina Svitolina.
Svitolina advanced to her 11th quarter-final of the campaign after an excellent win over Amanda Anisimova. She broke the American’s serve on five separate occasions as she won 6-2 6-4 after one hour and 18 minutes.
Svitolina leads 3-1 in the head-to-head and 2-0 on outdoor hard court, but this will be their first match against each other since 2021. The Ukrainian has looked increasingly assured as the tournament has progressed, and her consistency and defensive qualities could prove decisive.
