Ekaterina Alexandrova vs Belinda Bencic prediction

Ekaterina Alexandrova failed to win a third Libema Open title as she was defeated by Elise Mertens in a dramatic semi-final match. The Russian dominated the early part of the match and had a total of 11 match points but Mertens remarkably saved all of them and came back to win. Despite that intense disappointment of not getting over the line, it was still a solid way for Alexandrova to start her grass court season.

Belinda Bencic will be her opponent in round one and it will be the Swiss player’s first match on tour since retiring midway through her first-round encounter against Maria Sakkari at the Italian Open. She withdrew from Roland Garros just before the start of the tournament due to an ongoing arm injury but is now back and competing.

The head-to-head is 4-3 in Bencic’s favour but 1-1 on grass. Alexandrova came from a set down to defeat Bencic in Eastbourne six years ago but Bencic won at this very event in the quarter-final in 2021. 

They are evenly matched, but Bencic will be way short of match fitness, while Alexandrova has already made a solid start on grass this year. She is likely to win this one and make the round-of-16 stage.
