13th-seed Ekaterina Alexandrova comes into the US Open in good form having reached the final in Monterrey last week only to lose in three sets to Diana Shnaider. She picked up some good wins over Linda Noskova and Marie Bouzkova which will give her confidence and she will be hoping to get through to the second week in New York.
She has been handed a favourable draw as she meets 35-year-old Anastasija Sevastova on Tuesday.
A semi-finalist in 2018, Sevastova returned to action after maternity leave in February 2024 only to suffer a serious knee injury that ruled her out for over a year. She returned this summer and has had some positive results including a stunning win over Jessica Pegula in Canada just a few weeks ago.
Sevastova is looking refreshed and seriously motivated on her return but this is a tough assignment for her. Incredibly, the pair have never met before but we like Alexandrova in this one. She has good form behind her and she will know she cannot rest on her laurels against the motivated veteran.
