Donna Vekic hammered wildcard entrant Alice Tubello 6-3, 6-2 in the first round. Vekic has only ever made it past the second round of a Grand Slam event on one occasion, back at the 2023 US Open. The Croat put in a good show on clay last week as the reached the final of the WTA Challenger event in Istanbul.
In scorching conditions, the eccentric Naomi Osaka was composed as she defeated Laura Siegemund, clearly struggling with the heat, 6-3, 7-6 in the first round. The Japanese former world number one and four-time Grand Slam winner has never made it past the third round of the French Open.
Osaka heads into this one in reasonable form but she has not gone deep into a tournament since reaching the last 16 at last year’s US Open. That may give Vekic some hope, albeit the Japanese does remain favourites.
