Donna Vekic vs Elise Mertens prediction
Donna Vekic produced a fine display in the previous round to defeat Maria Sakkari in straight sets and advance to the round-of-16 in Monterrey. The world number 55 won the first four games of the match as she breezed through the first set. The second set was more challenging, with four consecutive breaks of serve at the start, but a rampant Vekic broke Sakkari on two more occasions to win 6-2 6-3. The Croatian converted 75% of her break point opportunities and won 79% of her points on first serve.
Elise Mertens also came through her first-round match in comfortable fashion, winning 6-4 6-3 against Anna Blinkova. The fifth seed broke at the start of the match and never really looked back as she safely booked her place in the last-16 of the tournament.
This will be the second meeting between the pair. Vekic won their only previous encounter, coming from a set down to beat Mertens in the first-round of the Wuhan Open on outdoor hard court last year. The Belgian has enjoyed the much better season and ought to be a comfortable favourite here.
