Coco Gauff was in real danger of a shocking first round exit despite going a set up against Ajla Tomljanovic. A second set tie-break defeat was followed up by a tense final frame. But Gauff held her nerve to come out on top by seven games to five and the American will hope to use that as a springboard moving forward.
She’ll need to be more ruthless against Donna Vekic, specifically regarding double faults. Gauff served up ten double faults vs Tomljanovic and Vekic is too good of a player not to take full advantage if we see something similar this time around. Vekic won’t be phased by the former US Open champion and will go toe-to-toe with Gauff on the power front, both in terms of serve and baseline play.
Ultimately though, Gauff has that extra gear that Vekic doesn’t. If she can find it over the course of this match, then Gauff will overwhelm her opponent and eventually come out on top whether it be via two or three sets.
