Diana Shnaider booked her place in the third-round of the Cincinnati Open after a straight sets win over Tatjana Maria. The Russian broke on five separate occasions as she won 6-2 7-5. Shnaider reached the quarter-finals of the Canadian Open last time out and has won six of her last eight matches overall.
She now faces Maja Chwalinska. The Pole picked up her first win since reaching the final of Roland Garros as she easily got past Cristina Bucsa. Chwalinska created 11 break point opportunities and reeled off the final four games as she won 6-2 6-2 after one hour and 32 minutes.
This will be a rematch of their semi-final at the French Open two months ago, which saw Chwalinska cause a huge upset as she beat Shnaider in straight sets. The fast surface should play further into Shnaider’s hands, and she will be determined to gain revenge after that crushing defeat.
