Diana Shnaider made it through to the round-of-16 in Brisbane after a comfortable win over Anastasia Potapova. The Russian broke serve on five separate occasions and overcame a 2-0 deficit in the second set to win 6-1 6-3 after an hour and 17 minutes. Shnaider was largely dominant on serve, winning 80% of her first serve points.
She now goes up against Madison Keys. The 2025 Australian Open champion also won her first match of 2026 in straight sets, defeating McCartney Kessler 6-4 6-3. She lost her earlier advantage at the start of the first set but was still largely in control. Keys struggled with injury towards the end of last season and will hope for an upturn at the start of this campaign.
Keys leads the head-to-head 2-0. She defeated Shnaider at Queen’s Club last season, coming from a set down to win. Shnaider can be a dangerous opponent, but the American has enough quality and consistency to come through this one.
