Diana Shnader made a comfortable start to her grass court season in the singles as she beat Magdalena Frech 6-4 6-1 in the first-round of Queen’s. It was an aggressive performance from the Russian, who fired 24 winners and wrapped up the win after just an hour and 11 minutes.
She now takes on home favourite Katie Boulter for a place in the quarters. Boulter edged a tight match with Australian qualifier Ajla Tomljanovic in her first match on the grass this year. The British number one made a good start but was pegged back in the second as Tomljanovic forced a decider. Boulter claimed a late break towards the end of the match, eventually coming through 7-6 1-6 6-4.
They have played once before in the final of the Hong Kong Open last year, with Shnaider thrashing Boulter 6-1 6-2 without even facing a break point. We expect a closer match this time around, with the current British number one having home support on her side. Nevertheless, Shnaider is a serious operator on the surface, evidenced by her victory in Bad Homburg last year and she should still make it through.
