Despite winning the title in Monterrey on the eve of the fourth slam of the season, Diana Shnaider’s singles run in New York was short-lived as she lost in the first-round to Laura Siegemund in three sets. She fared better in the doubles, making the quarter-finals, but that defeat would have been a disappointment for the Russian after her best singles tennis for some time in the lead up to the major. She begins her campaign in Seoul as the fifth seed.

Her first-round opponent is Caty McNally. Two straight set victories saw the world number 93 qualify for the main draw.
