After losing the first set, Australia’s Destanee Aiava thrilled the home crowd by winning a deciding-set tie-break against Greet Minnen in the first round, recording her first ever Grand Slam win in the process.
The 24-year-old, who is also competing in the Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles in Melbourne, looked match-sharp after coming through three rounds of qualifying to reach the main draw.
Former finalist Danielle Collins was given a tough test by qualifier Daria Snigur in the first round, with the American looking a little rusty having only played one warm-up match prior to the Australian Open. The 31-year-old, who recently made a retirement U-turn, won two titles in 2024, including the WTA 1000-rated Miami Open.
With the support of the home crowd behind her, Aiava will relish this opportunity against a seed, and Collins will be wary of allowing her opponent to get into the game. With the American not yet in top gear, this certainly has the potential to go to a decider.
