Denis Shapovalov began the defence of his title with a comeback win over Rinky Hijikata in the first-round. The Canadian started poorly but recovered to win 2-6 6-3 6-2. Shapovalov now leads Hijikata 2-0 in the head-to-head, having beaten the Australian in Adelaide three years ago. This was his fifth straight win at the event, stretching back to last year.
His next opponent is home favourite Rodrigo Pacheco Mendez. The 21-year-old delighted the crowd as he came from a set down to beat Sho Shimabukuro, picking up just his second tour-level win and his first at Los Cabos on his fifth appearance at the event. The Mexican was just two points from defeat at 5-4 down in the second set, but he turned it around to win 6-7 (4) 7-5 6-2.
Shapovalov enjoys the quick conditions at this tournament and ended his previous match strongly. If he is able to make a better start, he should have far too much for Pacheco Mendez.
