Denis Shapovalov will hope to end the season with a deep run in Paris after some decent results in his last two indoor events. He got through to the semi-finals in Stockholm but lost in straight sets to Casper Ruud, while he retired from his quarter-final match in Basel though the severity of the injury remains unclear, as he didn’t seem to be struggling physically.
That match was against Joao Fonseca and Shapovalov faces him for the second time in a matter of days. The Brazilian ended up winning the second title of his career at the event, beating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the final. The 19-year-old is now into the top 30 of the world rankings for the first time.
Shapovalov’s aggressive game translates well indoors but he faces someone who can even outhit him from the baseline in Fonseca. Their match in Basel was pretty close before the Canadian’s withdrawal after Fonseca went a double break up in the third. The Brazilian’s confidence will be high following his second title win and he’s well placed to win here.
