Denis Shapovalov’s quest to burst back into the top 20 continues in Shanghai.
The Canadian eased past Christopher O’Connell 6-3 6-2 in his opener and now faces Jiri Lehecka for a third time.
The head-to-head stands at 1-1 with Shapovalov winning the most recent and significant clash 6-2 6-1 in a semi-final in Belgrade last year.
Lehecka will represent a tougher challenge this time having won seven of his last eight matches and at 19 in the world he does sit five places above the Canadian in the rankings.
As with many a match involving Shapo, however, it may well be on his racquet. If he plays lights out tennis it could be similar to that semi-final last year, but if Lehecka serves well and stays resilient, he could lure the unforced errors to make this as close as it should be on paper.
