He plays Flavio Cobolli in the next round. The Italian defeated Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca in a high-quality encounter in round one. He saved a match point in the deciding tiebreak as he won 5-7 7-6 7-6 after two hours and 44 minutes. He is now on a six-match winning streak in Germany after winning the title in Hamburg a few weeks ago on clay.
Shapovalov has not been in the best of form but will take a lot of confidence from his victory in the first-round while Cobolli performed at a very high level to get the better of Fonseca in his previous match. There is no clear favourite and this could go deep into a third set.
