Denis Shapovalov’s inconsistent season continued as his Asian swing began with an early defeat at the Japan Open to Daniel Altmaier. The Canadian showed his undoubted quality at the US Open last month, making the third-round and taking a set off Jannik Sinner, but the Canadian has failed to sustain his form throughout the whole year. Shapovalov won their only previous meeting in comfortable fashion in the quarter-finals of the Belgrade Open last year. We will still give the edge to the Canadian on this occasion, but he will need to cut out the errors if he is to get through.
