Darwin Blanch secured his first ever win on the ATP Tour in the first-round as he beat 2022 Cincinnati Open champion Borna Coric in straight sets. Blanc got the crucial break in the 10th game of the first set to take the lead and then held off a Coric fightback in the second set tiebreak to win 6-4 7-6. The 17-year-old did not lose serve during the entire match, saving all three break point opportunities.
Alexandre Muller was given a bye as he enters the tournament as the eighth seed. He suffered a disappointing defeat in the first-round of the Cincinnati Open, as he lost to Jenson Brooksby in three sets. His other results have also been underwhelming, as he was thrashed 6-0 6-1 by Corentin Moutet in Washington and could only win one match at Toronto before a straight sets loss to Holger Rune. Nevertheless, he does have a title on the surface this season after winning the Hong Kong Open at the start of the year.
Blanch is an exciting player with promise and could worry Muller at times, but the Frenchman is still a commanding favourite here.
