Darja Vidmanova has managed to overcome Caroline Werner and Panna Udvardy to reach the Monterrey Open. The 23-year-old Czech began her hard court season well, reaching the final in Memphis earlier this month before a first round exit to Anhelina Kalinina at the Cincinnati Open.

28-year-old Kimberly Birrell is in the midst of a poor run of form at the moment with first round defeats in Memphis at then at WTA 1000 events in Toronto and Cincinnati. She has not made it to the second round of a full WTA event since the winter.

Birrell heads into this clash in fairly average form and, off the back of wins in qualification, Vidmanova may well be the tip to carry through her run of momentum.
