Daria Kasatkina came from a set down to beat Xinyu Wang in her first-round match at the Canadian Open. She then performed impressively against world number two Elena Rybakina, taking the match into a decider after winning the second set. She forced a number of errors from Rybakina, but the Kazakh would go on to win in three sets. Kasatkina won a WTA 125 title in Catalonia earlier this season, while she also progressed to the last eight at the Strasbourg Open.
Her first-round opponent in Cincinnati is Zeynep Sonmez. The Turk also fell at the second-round stage in Toronto, losing in straight sets to Maria Sakkari. It’s still been an encouraging campaign overall for Sonmez, who has reached three quarter-finals and broken into the world’s top 50 for the first time in her career.
Kasatkina leads the head-to-head 1-0 after a straight sets win at this year’s French Open. Sonmez is likely to be more competitive on a hard court.
