Daria Kasatkina has struggled for form ever since making the fourth round of the Australian Open and losing a close three-set match with Emma Navarro. She made the third round at both the Qatar Open and Indian Wells but crashed out in the second round of the Miami Open to Hailey Baptiste in three sets after receiving a bye in the first round.
She can take confidence from her strong run at this event last year, which saw her beat the likes of Jessica Pegula to make the final, before losing in straight sets to Danielle Collins. She also won the 2017 edition of the tournament, which happens to be her only clay court title on the WTA Tour, so Kasatkina must be hopeful of another strong run at the event this year.
Her second-round opponent is Lauren Davis, who overcame a slow start to defeat compatriot Jamie Loeb 3-6 6-1 6-3 to advance through. These two have never played each other before but history shows that Kasatkina enjoys playing in Charleston and she should safely book her place in the round of 16 with victory here.
