Jaqueline Cristian produced an eyebrow-raising display to stun Ekaterina Alexandrova and power into the round of 16.

The Romanian pulled off a major surprise as she downed the fourth seed 6-4 6-4.

The world number 37 will now tackle Daria Kasatkina after the Aussie delighted the home crowd with a 7-6 6-4 win over a resurgent Maria Sakkari.

This will be a fourth meeting between the two players with Kasatkina winning all of the previous three, including a 6-2 6-4 success in their last encounter at the 2024 US Open.

Cristian is tougher nut to crack nowadays and buoyed by that fine win over Alexandrova and her current career high, she’ll hope to make more of an impact in this one.

Kasatkina’s variety can often perplex her opponent and she will have the Aussie crowd behind her, making it tough to back against the former world number eight, despite her being ranked 11 places lower than the Romanian at present.
