Daniil Medvedev is the top seed at the Winston-Salem Open. The former world number one had three match points against Brandon Nakashima in the third-round of Cincinnati, but the American saved them all and went on to win in three sets. Medvedev also suffered an early loss in Montreal to Botic van de Zandschulp. The Russian’s season began promisingly, with titles in Brisbane and Dubai, along with a run to the final of Indian Wells, but his form has completely nosedived since his semi-final appearance at the Italian Open in May.

He faces Martin Damm in the second-round after receiving a bye. The American won 87% of his first serve points as he wrapped up a straight sets win over Abedallah Shelbayh. Damm also fired 16 aces, winning 6-4 7-6 (2).

If Damm continues to serve well, he should be able to keep pace with Medvedev. The 2021 US Open has performed poorly in recent weeks, but he is still a clear favourite to win this encounter.
