Daniil Medvedev swept aside Frances Tiafoe in the round-of-16 to advance to the quarter-finals in Brisbane. The former world number one did not even face a break point, winning 91% of his first serve points as he sealed a 6-3 6-2 win after just one hour. Medvedev ended last season strongly after a change in his coaching set up towards the end of 2025, and he has started the new campaign in confident fashion.
He now faces Kamil Majchrzak. The Pole saved three matches points on his way to victory over last year’s finalist Reilly Opelka. There were no breaks of serve throughout the whole match, but Majchrzak held his nerve after going behind to win 6-7 (2) 7-6 (7) 7-6 (8) after two hours and 29 minutes in total.
Medvedev has been in control so far, and he’s unlikely to encounter too many problems against Majchrzak, who has already spent over seven hours on court, including his two qualifying matches.
