Daniil Medvedev defeated Marton Fucsovics in round one to make it through to the next stage in Brisbane. It was a mostly comfortable encounter for the former world number one, who did drop serve on two occasions but created plenty of opportunities for himself as he won 6-2 6-3.
He goes up against Frances Tiafoe next. The American ended his 2025 campaign early but was in fine form in the first-round as he beat Aleksandar Vukic 6-2 6-2 after just one hour. Tiafoe did not face a break point throughout the match and won 82% of first serve points.
Medvedev leads the head-to-head 5-1, but Tiafoe did win their most recent meeting at the Laver Cup in 2024. The Russian ended last season in strong form after a coaching change and will hope to replicate that with a title early on in 2026. Tiafoe will be a test for Medvedev, but he comes into this as the clear favourite.
